The Power of Colour – Issue Three: Greens in the Home

By | Posted in: The Power of Colour | Tagged: , , , , , , , , |

Green can easily be associated with nature and therefore, as I’m sure you can guess, leaves us feeling grounded, calm and peaceful. There was a time when Green was my least favourite colour, painful memories of my dad pulling up to school in a Bright Green Fiat Panda has never left my thoughts. In recent years, however, it has endeared itself to me and, in turn, opened up my mind to its many wonderful evocative qualities.

‘Green [colour] is very nourishing to your health, as it calms your nerves and balances your whole body by bringing healing feng shui vibrations from mother Nature. When working with green [colour] to create a good feng shui house, it is important to have at least several different shades of green in order to bring its healing effects’. -Found on about.com

Green is another versatile colour but, as with Purple, different types of Green have different effects;

Green Splatter

Most Greens would work well in a bedroom or living room setting, as the calming qualities will help you relax and unwind. I would suggest selecting Warmer Greens for this, as I’m sure you don’t want your cozy space feeling chilly. Light Greens and Bluer Greens work well in bathrooms, Blue Greens in particular, as they invoke the feelings of harmony, restoration and rest. Like Deep Purple, Emerald is a good colour for rooms used to entertain guests, for example, kitchens or dining rooms. It is seen as luxurious and, of course, shares a name with a valuable and sort after jewel and our favourite city in Oz.

Green Devil

Fun fact: We all know that trusty Saint Nick (aka Santa) used to be dressed in green, for all those who didn’t know Coca Cola was responsible for his current red attire. But, did you know that back in the 15th Century the Devil was also depicted as Green (pictured left) and has been linked to the colour green by medieval poets such as Chaucer.

But how does one match Green to anything else? Tip time! Take a photo of a landscape you love (or find a picture that already exists) and select colours from there. Photoshop is good for this or a simple to use apps like Coolors can be used to select colours from natures pallet. Now is also the time to get familiar with Pinterest. It’s the perfect way to select a colour scheme, search ‘green colour pallet’ (or something to that effect) and voila! This does work with any colour or picture, but I love the idea of selecting natural colours from natural landscapes.

The End Result

At Stone and Wood Shop we love what we do and we love the products that we sell, especially when our products are part of your project. Whether big or small, we get a real buzz from making sure our products look the part in any space.

One of the most satisfying feelings for me however is seeing the end result. Nothing compares to seeing an enquiry turn into a space for a family to enjoy or a hardworking developer to give their clients the reality of their vision.

One such client of ours was over the summer where they required a large amount of Marble tiles to cover a kitchen and living area. The space had lots of beautiful natural light all day and views of the surrounding hills. As well as this, it would be part of a Shaker style kitchen so we knew the stone had to have warmth, light and character.

The end result in this case was our Sofiya Beige Polished Marble and as you can see from the images below, we (and the client!) had lots to be proud about.

The Sofiya Beige Polished Marble is one of the most beautiful stones we have ever had the pleasure of having in our range. With a warm beige colour, natural white and the occasional dark veining, this carefully selected Turkish marble was the perfect candidate for this project. It fit in with the surrounding light and the squared edges gave the modern and contemporary feel that any Shaker kitchen requires. Available in smaller sizes as well it’s not just limited to kitchen floors but hallways, bathrooms and living areas.

The Power of Colour – Issue Two: The Purple Family

By | Posted in: The Power of Colour | Tagged: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

For me, Purple is one of the most versatile colours and can have positive effects in most, if not all, aspects of the home; this is due to the combination of cool (blue) and warm (red). It is also one of my favourite colours, I tell you this to not only be honest with you but to highlight the fact that a colours affect can differ from person to person. While it’s a favourite of mine, it might be attached to some painful and upsetting memories for someone else. So please take a look at your own preference in addition to these articles.

There are many qualities associated with purple; royalty, creativity, artistry, wealth, mystery and spirit – This is why it is so versatile. BUT before you start slathering that paint on those walls it is worth looking at the different types of purple;

Some might argue that Red Purple would be great for decorating the bedroom, cue newlyweds, however if this is the place where you would like to wind down and relax perhaps Lavender or Amethyst might suit your purposes better. Feng Shui advises against using purple in the bedroom, however using the right purple in the right way can be advantageous.

When looking at Deep Purple, which promotes a Royal and Positive atmosphere, you might want to consider the room you will use most for entertaining. Dining room, kitchen or living room mixed with silver and white detailing is often associated with sophistication and class. I might also suggest some of Stone and Wood’s own Elegant Matt Black Tiles especially if you are redecorating your kitchen.

Fun Fact: When purple was discovered, in 4th Century BC, it was so expensive that only royalty could afford it. As ancient rulers were often thought of as Gods we now associate this deep intense purple with spirituality and royalty.

Amethyst, Mauve and Lilac are good bathroom colours as they encourage peaceful, relaxing thoughts. However, Perhaps Blue Purple is the best one for this room as when we take a look at Blue more closely you will learn that blues induce calming and peaceful thoughts and obviously we associate Blue with water. On the other hand some people might feel as though this is their thinking space, so for those people Red Purple might actually be more beneficial.

If you are in a position to choose which rooms will serve what purpose, plan the colour you want for each room and then which position of the house you will put it. If you have decided that a Deep Purple is the colour you must have for your bedroom, you might want to save a larger room for this as dark colours can make rooms look smaller – you can also consider which rooms will have the most light. If you have already assigned rooms and have a smaller bedroom, you can alternatively choose one wall to paint and accent with this colour, which can actually elongate your room. You don’t even have to pick up a paintbrush, if you have a white room already and you don’t want to paint just accent your room with purple soft furnishings, pictures and furniture.

The Power of Colour – Issue One: An Introduction (There is more to colour than meets the eye).

So, you have your shiny new floor but the rest of your room now needs to catch up or maybe you are trying to plan your room in preparation for your flooring – recommended; you wouldn’t want to get paint all over your new Engineered Oak Flooring now would you? But how can you possibly choose from all the colours? It might seem like the obvious choice to pick your favourite, or a neutral colour, but first really look into what room you are decorating and how that colour would work. It’s easy to go neutral but if you are trying to make your house, your home, you have a real chance of achieving this through a bit of colour, so try not to be afraid of them.

There is a lot to be said about colours and how they affect our overall mood, it’s true! Some colours invoke energy and awareness, such as yellow – side note; yellow can also cause anger and frustration but I will be covering Yellow in more detail at a later date – while others are known for being soothing and restful, like some greens and purples. Yellow might be your favourite colour but would you want it in your bedroom?

It’s worth considering how you want to use each room. Is it your creative space, a space for focus or for calm? Maybe you want to entertain guest on a regular basis or paint your little girls room, you can really use colour to your advantage! While neutral colours might be safe and inoffensive, a more bold choice used in the right way can actually impact your life daily in a positive way.

Each issue of this blog series will cover a colour group in detail. You can’t just say green is calming, orange is energising, pink is compassionate and so on, as certain types of greens, orange and pinks are quite the opposite (as goes for other colours). Along side this I will include how to detail your room. Deep purples with silver detailing can be seen as royal and sophisticated – perhaps this is good for a room used for entertaining?

Ultimately you will instinctively know how a colour makes you feel and how it affects your mood but it’s my goal to give you a little more guidance to ensure you will get the most out of your home.
