The best quality imported slate floor tiles are from Brazil. Suitable for flooring and for wall tiles in bathrooms and wet rooms, the grey and black slates are the most popular.

Avoid using the green slate for pools or shower areas - it doesn't like it!

We offer an unusual brushed finish on our black slate. This works very well with this material, giving it a softer appearance and strangely it actually feels softer as well.

Brazilian slates have a very tight grain structure which means their riven or cleft surface undulates very little. The cheaper Indian and Chinese products have a very uneven surface and are much softer and flakier.

The purple, red and ochre colours seen in the Brazilian multicolour slate is a result of metemorphism where organic matter and iron oxides are present. The colours are stable in the stone making this material equally suitable for flooring as the plainer black or grey slates.

Our rough guide to buying, installing and living with slate tiles

Of all the natural stones, slate tiles are the least costly to buy and certainly amongst the most durable. Slate tiles are hard and relatively impervious making them naturally resistant to staining.

Choosing slate tiles

There are many slate tiles on the market and you may know just what you want but it's worth making some simple distinctions at this point. There are a number of very colourful slate tiles from China and India – indeed these tend to be the most colourful slate tiles – they are relatively soft compared to Brazilian slate tiles and much more uneven on their surface. At stone and wood shop we sell the Brazilian slate tiles for walls and floors. The nature of these slate tiles is such that when they a ‘ split ‘ to produce a ‘riven' finish the surface is still relatively flat making them rather smarter slate tiles than the Indian and Chinese products which can be considered as rustic slate tiles.

Colour

The Brazilian slate tiles are available in black- which is really more of a charcoal colour, grey, green and multicolour.

Finish

These slate tiles are available in a honed finish but it is a characteristic of slate tiles that this finish is very easily scratched and is not really suitable as a slate tile for flooring. Bathroom walls do look great with honed or brushed slate tiles.

Much more popular and hard wearing are the riven slate tiles.

Sizes

The Brazilian slate tiles are available in small sizes – 300 x 300 right up to 1200 x 900 mm. For ease of installation it is worth buying the calibrated slate tiles we off are the cost saving in buying non-calibrated slate tiles is more than offset buy the extra time it takes to sort through and lay these sort of slate tiles.

As usual particular attention should be paid to subfloor preparation before you lay your slate tiles.

If you are doing the job yourself then you will need the right tools for the job and slate tiles are no different from other natural stones in this regard. You will need the usual tiler's tools as well as a wet cutter with a diamond blade. You can dry cut slate tiles with an angle grinder but be prepared for a dust storm.
