Our rough guide to buying, installing and living with limestone tiles
Over the last decade the range of limestone tiles for floors and walls available in the UK has pretty much exploded. You may not realise that browsing through the stone and woodshop website you will find limestone tiles from tradition suppliers like Italy but also Germany, Turkey, Portugal, Israel and in recent times Egypt too has established itself as a supplier of popular limestone tiles.
So how do you choose..
Well, as with many things picking limestone tiles usually comes down to spotting something you like and seeing if you can afford it. You can at least be assured that when you buy limestone tiles from stoneandwoodshop you are getting a fantastic deal.
Buying natural limestone tiles over the internet does present a challenge – ideally of course you would view lots of the stone you like the look of to make sure it is what you want. Clearly this is not possible when buying at a distance although if you can take a trip to our warehouse in Kent we will be happy to show you around.
We have some very good quality pictures of our range of limestone tiles on the site so please take the time to look closely at these including the close ups, this will give a good idea of the nature of the stone. Please also order some samples from us. We will send you four pieces mounted on a card and these will have been sealed to give a true impression of how the limestone tiles will look once installed.
One way to narrow down your choice of limestone tile is by size and thickness. You generally have a choice of sizes but not all limestone tiles are available in all sizes. Different size limestone tiles give a very different ‘look’. Large 600 x 600 squares of course look different to anything rectangular bur rectangles of the same sizes, say 600 x 400 laid ‘brickbond’ will look completely different to any limestone tiles laid as random lengths.
Oh and the other thing is the small limestone tiles are always cheaper than the large ones but they take longer to lay!
Laying limestone tiles
As with all natural stone installations the first thing to think about is the correct preparation of the subfloor or walls onto which you want to fix your limestone tiles.
We have comprehensive information elsewhere on the site please take time to read this if you plan to do the work yourself. You will also need the right tools for the job which will include a diamond wet cutter. It is also worthwhile thinking about adhesives, grouts and sealers when you order your limestone tiles. Stoneandwoodshop supplies good quality products for fixing limestone tiles.
A note on adhesives – for pale limestone tiles use a white adhesive.
All of our limestone tiles are suitable for use with underfloor heating but remember to use a flexible adhesive and we recommend you include Schluter ditra matting as well
Make sure you thoroughly seal your limestone tiles before grouting and seal them again having left the grout to dry thoroughly.
We sell Ardex grouts for use with limestone tiles- Ardex are the market leaders and although their grouts are relatively expensive we offer them at a discounted price and strongly recommend you use grouts of this quality for consistant colour, dirt resistance and to avoid the staining of limestone tiles which can occur with cheap grouts not spacifically formulated for use with natural stone and limestone tiles.
Whilst it is no problem to lay limestone tiles when they a damp, they must be thoroughly dry before sealing. You should also be aware that they will change colour when they dry so what you see when the tiles come out of the crate may not be the final colour.
Ordering limestone tiles
Stoneandwoodshop keeps large stocks of limestone tiles at our depot. We can deliver to you within three working days or next day if needs be.
Always order and check samples please before you buy and remember to add 10% extra for cuts and wastage.
Please note that the edges of limestone tiles are vulnerable to damage so stack you tiles on edge on something soft but avoid damp wood battens as this contains tanin and can stain the limestone tiles.

Only ever use the correct products for cleaning limestone tiles, general household cleaners are not suitable- you need a natural stone soap, we recommend Lithofin Easy Care for day to day use and Lithofin Powerclean for occasional deep cleaning. The Powerclean can also be added to you water when cleaning of your limestone tiles after grouting as it helps to break down the cement residue. You can order both products with your limestone tiles
